Roy P. Benavidez Medal of Honor


Born: Aug. 5, 1935 in Cuero, Tex…. Benavidez stepped on a land mine during a solo reconnaissance mission in 1965. Doctors thought he would never walk again, but he recovered and rejoined Special Forces… Initially awarded the Distinguished Service Cross until upgraded to Medal of Honor in 1981… Also awarded five Purple Hearts… Retired as a Master Sergeant in 1976… Namesake of roll-on roll-off vehicle cargo ship USNS BENAVIDEZ (T-AKR-306)… Departed 1998 and interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas
