PRIVATE FIRST CLASS LOUIS I. GARE
CITATION:
Private First Class Louis I. Gare, 12135677, Infantry, Company “G”, 411th Infantry Regiment. For heroism in action. During the daylight hours of 15 December 1944, in the vicinity of * * * , France, Private Gare observed an attacking platoon pinned down by intense enemy small arms and anti-tank fire. Crawling forward, with utter disregard for his life, he discovered the source of enemy fire coming from a well fortified hostile strongpoint. Realizing this obstacle had to be neutralized immediately, he, on his own initiative, courageously dashed toward the emplacement shouting for them to surrender. As a result of Private Gare’s magnificent display of outstanding valor, three of the completely bewildered enemy surrendered to him. A fourth member of the hostile group, refusing to surrender, attacked him, but was instantly killed by Private Gare’s accurately aimed rifle fire. Residence: Newark, New Jersey.
