TO
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS GORDON L. HIGGINS

CITATION:

Private First Class Gordon L. Higgins, 31327710, Medical Department, Medical Detachment, 409th Infantry Regiment. For heroism in action. During the daylight hours of 14 December 1944, in the vicinity of * * * , France, a call was received at the battalion aid station stating that several members of an assault company were wounded. Though it was known that the forward area was under intense enemy artillery and small arms fire, Private Higgins on his own initiative, and showing little regard for his welfare, immediately drove a jeep forward. Harassing enemy action did not deter him as he relentlessly evacuated seriously wounded comrades from the front lines. On three occasions he courageously made the dangerous trip, while under direct enemy observation. Even when the litter bearer beside him was hit, he did not falter in his important work. His great devotion to duty while under extremely trying conditions contributed materially to the speedy evacuation of the wounded. Residence: Stratford, Connecticut.
