During the daylight hours of 18 November 1944, in the vicinity of * * * , France, Private McCullough, medical aid man attached to Company “D”, observed a wounded comrade in desperate need of medical attention lying in an exposed position under intense enemy artillery and sniper fire. Fully cognizant of the impending danger, he courageously crawled 85 yards over fire-swept terrain to aid his injured comrade. Although bullets raked his path he continued on with utter disregard for his life. He succeeded in reaching his comrade’s side and administered first aid efficiently and expeditiously. Realizing further professional action was imperative, he carried the man through the devastating fire to the nearest aid station.
