William L. Bay’s Silver Star citation
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS WILLIAM L. BAY, USMC.,
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Division in combat against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Gloucester Area, New Britain, December 28, 1943. Wounded by four Japanese who suddenly rushed at him when his company moved into assault, Private First Class Bay quickly turned on his attackers and, despite his own serious condition, killed them by rifle fire. His fearless aggressiveness and valiant fighting spirit in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. “
