CITATION:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Natamo Point, Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on January 25, 1944.Sighting a wounded Marine lying exposed to hostile fire, Private First Class Sunny fearlessly swam across a stream and crawled over a sandspit in face of devastating enemy machine-gun fire in a vliant effort to effect a rescue. Critically injured upon reaching the side of his fallen comrade, he was forced to remain in his perilous position until friendly forces silenced the enemy fire and finally rescued him four hours later. Private First Class Sunny’s daring initiative and self-sacrificeing efforts in behalf of another at great risk to his own life reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.”
