Robert P. Sachen’s Silver Star citation
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
SERGEANT ROBERT P. SACHEN, USMC.,
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on January 14, 1944. As his men fought their way through dense jungle undergrowth and up an exceptionally steep and well defended hill, Sergeant Sachen continually exposed himself to attack from concealed Japanese emplacements in order to remove the wounded from the zone of enemy machine-gun fire to a sheltered position where they could be treated for their injuries. Sergeant Sachen’s extreme bravery in the face of grave danger contributed to the saving of many lives and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
For the President,
/s/ James Forrestal
Secretary of the Navy
