The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to

LIEUTENANT COLONEL HENRY WILLIAM BUSE, JR.,
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS,

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Henry William Buse, Jr. (MCSN: 0-4993), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, from 14 to 16 January 1944. Conducting an assault on heavily fortified Hill 660, Lieutenant Colonel Buse boldly directed and controlled the activities of his men throughout the entire bitter attack, seizing this most difficult and strategic objective of the operation with a minimum of casualties to our fighting units. Lieutenant Colonel Buse’s inspiring leadership, valiant fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty under enemy fire contributed to the success of our forces in that area and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Graduated from the Naval Academy (Class of ’34)… Earned the Bronze Star with Combat “V” at Guadalcanal… Also served in Korea… Was Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific during the Vietnam War and frequently visited combat zones… Retired as a lieutenant general in 1970… Son Henry W. Buse III retired from the Marines as a colonel… Passed 18 October 1988… Interred: United States Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Md.
