Richard G. Saylor’s Silver Star citation
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS RICHARD G. SAYLOR, USMC.,
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Member of a platoon serving with the First Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on January 6, 1944.During a vigorous tank attack against a strongly fortified enemy road block flanked on one side by the sea and on the other by a deep swamp, Private First Class Saylor skillfully prevented the hurling of hostile mines at our tanks by directing a steady and accurate stream of fire on the enemy. By his heroic conduct and disregard for his own personal safety throughout this fierce engagement in which he was struck unconscious and injured by an exploding mine, he afforded expert protection for our tanks and inflicted a number of casualties on the enemy. Private First Class Saylor’s aggressive fighting spirit and unflinching devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
For the President,
