Leonard Cole’s Silver Star citation
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS LEONARD COLE, USMC.,
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Forward Observation Post, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Hill 450, Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on January 3, 1944. When the right platoon of Company A was viciously attacked by a strong hostile force, Private First Class Cole voluntarily braved the devastating Japanese fire to gain an advantageous position on the forward slope of a ridge where the fighting was most intense in an effort to prevent a break-through in our lines. Despite a serious wound received during the bitter engagement, he steadfastly continued an accurate and steady stream of fire until the hostile attack was completely repulsed with heavy losses inflicted upon the enemy. His daring aggressiveness, indomitable fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were a constant inspiration to his comrades and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
For the President,
/s/ James Forrestal
Secretary of the Navy
