Edwin A. Schwab’s Silver Star citation

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to

SERGEANT EDWIN A. SCHWAB, USMC.,

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain Island, January 3, 1944.When his company became pinned down by an intensive barrage of hostile fire on a sparsely concealed slope while advancing against a determined and well-entrenched enemy, Sergeant Schwab sighted three wounded Marines within twenty-five feet of a Japanese machine-gun emplacement and, fearlessly crawling to the side of his comrades, dragged two of them to safety and rendered assistance to another. Undeterred by danger to himself, he promptly collected first aid equipment from other personnel and skillfully ministered to the injured. Sergeant Schwab’s daring initiative, heroic efforts and great personal valor in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
