Elliott B. Sherlock’s Silver Star citation
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
CORPORAL ELLIOTT B. SHERLOCK,
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE,
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Runner of Headquarters and Service Company, First Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces at Cape Gloucester, New Britain on 26 and 28 December 1943.Frequently under vicious enemy sniper fire while engaged as runner between the front lines and the regimental command post, Corporal Sherlock resolutely conveyed the vital messages with which he was entrusted. With bold aggressiveness, he pushed through tremendous barrages, on 28 December, to carry information of a dangerous ammunition shortage to the command post and immediately returned to continue his essential work. Corporal Sherlock’s daring initiative, indomitable fortitude and unflinching devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
For the President,
