I. AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR:

By direction of the President, under the provisions of Army Regulations 600-45, August 8, 1932, the Silver Star is awarded by the Commanding General, United States Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, to each of the following named officers and enlisted men:

JOHN S. BARRY, (335165) Private First Class, United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action on December 26, 1942 at Guadalcanal. Private First Class Barry, a member of an Artillery observation party of Marines supporting infantry of the Army, was pinned to the ground, with others, by Machine gun and rifle fire while accompanying advance infantry elements to obtain observation well forward. Stretcher bearers were attempting to evacuate one of the casualties when they were also brought under fire. Private First Class Barry and two others voluntarily and in complete disregard of their own safety succeeded in evacuating the wounded man. Home Address: 4412 Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.
