Roy C. Bailey’s Silver Star citation

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to

FIRST SERGEANT ROY C. BAILEY, U.S. MARINE CORPS,

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands on November 3, 1942. When his battalion launched an attack, First Sergeant Bailey, by his active reconnaissance, was thoroughly acquainted with the situation throughout the battle. Mindful that the Third Platoon had been hit hard and having no men at his dosposal, he personally proceeded  to close a gap left by heavy casualties by moving and placing himself on the firing line. When the platoon ran short of hand grenades, he withdrew and began to supply them, bringing the weapons forward under tremendous hostile fire until he was seriously wounded, twice in the abdomen and once in the left arm. His heroic conduct, maintained at great risk in the face of grave danger, was largely responsible for the annihilation of the Japanese strong point.”

For the President,
/s/ Frank Knoxl
Secretary of the Navy
