Paranoid Media Watchdog Threatens Press Freedoms
Posted 06:54 PM ET
A left-wing "media watchdog" boss reportedly colludes with the White House and fantasizes that snipers are aiming at him. The real assassination attempt is government targeting of freedom of the press.
Media Matters For America head David Brock surrounded himself with "more security than a Third World dictator," including a semi-automatic-toting "assistant" protecting him from right-wing assassination squads, according to the Daily Caller.
Add in ex-journalist Brock's reported $250,000 annual salary and Media Matters financier George Soros may start wondering if he's getting the best, ahem, bang for his buck.
Recent revelations expose Media Matters as nothing more than a thinly disguised adjunct of the Democratic National Committee. With President Obama announcing he was breaking his campaign promise of refusing the help of Super PACs, you'll never guess who serves as the head of a new one called American Bridge 21st Century: Media Matters' David Brock. And there's lots of overlap in the two groups' donor lists.
And guess who a year and a half ago met — with then-Media Matters president Eric Burns — in the White House with close Obama adviser and friend Valerie Jarrett and recently departed White House communications director Anita Dunn, according to visitor logs: David Brock.
Meanwhile, Dunn was "a regular presence" at Media Matters' offices, according to a worker there who became a Daily Caller source.
Media Matters' prime target is Fox News, the remarkable rise of which is the crowning achievement of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. It is now long ago that Fox achieved what so many media "experts" claimed was impossible: It unseated CNN as the most-watched and most-powerful news channel.
Fox, along with talk radio and blogs, transformed America's media landscape. No longer do the liberal Big Three Networks of ABC, CBS and NBC rule the roost in the delivery of, and spin on, the news. So it's no coincidence that, in this election year, News Corp. is under a forceful and multi-pronged criminal probe.
Reporters, editors and others working for Murdoch tabloids in Britain appear to have broken the law via hacking and wire tapping, and that behavior is not to be excused.
But London's Daily Telegraph — an esteemed publication that is not a Murdoch property — reported indications of London police exhibiting "witch hunt"-like aggressiveness in the wire-tapping probe. Investigators have come up with frivolous allegations such as "reporters taking contacts out for drinks, meals and the like" and sent "huge teams of counter-terrorism detectives" to search homes where they go through "children's underwear drawers about things which happened seven or eight years ago."
A London Sun source told the Telegraph it was "behavior reminiscent of (Robert) Mugabe," referring to Zimbabwe's notoriously oppressive leftist dictator.
The U.S. government will likely become heavily involved and extend the investigation to Murdoch's U.S.-based headquarters under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. That 1977 law expanded accounting transparency requirements of public companies and also focused on bribery of foreign officials.
Murdoch tabloid personnel's purported payoffs to British police may fall under the act's purview; last July, Obama Attorney General Eric Holder began a joint effort with the British government to see if News Corp. violated the FCPA.
The Australian-born media titan might regret that News Corp. is a publicly traded company, which exposes it to convoluted laws the Obama administration is now sure to exploit.
Add Obama's newly announced plans to organize a 2 million-strong set of "truth teams" around the country and from Brock to Murdoch to the Super PACs to these 21st century hope-and-change brownshirts, the theme becomes clear:
President Obama is determined to control the information flow being received by the public.

Isn't it amazing how people don't care about this? You oughtta see some of the memos floating around which detail what these people are planning or have already planned. And it is all happening with the complete blessing of the Obama Administration. Smacks of Richard Nixon's enemies list...
I am straight, white, male and conservative. Now what else can I do to piss you off today?
