This last weekend I took a small group of Scouts to a North Texas Orienteering Association, NTOA.com, race which was held at Camp Wisdom. We had a great time and I ran an orange, class OM45+, meaning old, fat, slow men, but I ended up with a gold medal on my neck so the rest of the men in my class must have been even more seasoned and well marbled.

The best part of the weekend was that Alison "Ali" Crocker, a member of the U.S. national orienteering team, participated in the event. It was great for the boys to meat an Olympian competing in U.S. team colors. She ran a red course in about the same time it took me to run just an orange and completely crushed her competition.

My oldest son, John, also completed his Orienteering merit badge.

We camped two nights and the weather was nearly perfect. I have a custom made Nunatak down quilt and a light weight bivy made by Mountain Laurel Designs. I love sleeping outside especially when the weather is a bit colder. I camp an average of about 30 to 40 nights each year with the BSA and I gave up tents about two years ago in favor of just a tarp or a bivy. I love the fresh air and sleeping out under God's glorious blanket of stars.

I don't expect a lot of responses to this thread but I just wanted to share something a bit more personal. So many people have been kind to me on this forum and I know that I am rather cold and distant, argumentative.

I wish all a most joyous time this Christmas season.

Warm Regards,
Richard

Merry Christmas old man, we have three kids around your age, one young man and two young lady's. Enjoy life now to the fullest, because from now on, time will begin to fly. It seems like it was only yesterday that we were your age, and were camping fanatics around the ghost towns of California, Nevada, and Arizona.

Regards,

Bob.

Congratulations, Richard. We now "camp" in a 39' motorhome with all the bells and whistles, but I fondly remember a time many years ago sleeping under the stars with nothing between me and them but a sleeping bag...
