The only teachers we hear about are the ones either having sex with their students or the ones preaching against America or the President.

A truly sad commentary the "only teachers we hear about," isn't it? I often wonder why those are the "only teachers we hear about" in much of media.

On edit, I would suggest it is because they are the anomaly and therefore, newsworthy. Those who just do their jobs well, as expected, simply aren't news.

That's not just true in the teaching profession....

How much do we hear about "good" politicians...that's not coming from paid advertising?
Good priests? policemen? lawyers? CEOs?

Good doesn't sell newspapers. Scandalous does.

Squid's dad would be an excellent example. While I don't doubt that he won awards with in his profession, and numerous students have returned to tell him what a wonderful teacher he was and a great impact he had on their lives, I doubt that would get any front page coverage. Had he taught in his underwear only, he may have gotten some exposure...in more ways than one!

Mickey

PS No offense intended, Squid. Your dad sounds like a wonderful man, teacher and father. Your buddy, Steven, spoke highly of him.

I would guess that it is the public school haters way of justifying their position. The hundreds of thousands of truly dedicated, great teachers do nothing to support their disregard for the public schools.

I believe your question go's beyond teachers and ask us what do we see in media and why. For the most part it was money. Did you see the move Good Night and Good Luck? It showed a time where NEWS was carried at a financial loss to the networks. I think the FCC mandated 30 mins NEWS every 6 hours. When it was pushed into making profit journalism was set aside for entertainment. What we see today, as news is really entertainment. Sex and scandal sells. I remember the phrase of the day was always profit through tragedy, a kind of inside joke in the industry. Why does NEWS play to the lowest common denominator? Because it sells, we prostitute out integrity to provide you with what you want. And trust me you do want this slime; the numbers don't lie on this one. It's the old saw to find the truth follow the dollar.

Did you fly the freeway traffic beat John? If so, whatever happened to Capt. Bob, I think that was his name. He got in some trouble with the government over assault rifles if I recall right....

Naw that’s me doing my Tech thing with Capt. Bob’s chopper. If I remember right the guy that sat behind him was Dane, a real giant of a man and did his camera work. KNBC had just dropped the service contract with our company in 1999 and I lost track of Bob.

Bob was a good guy I wish him well, but I fear for the worse.

I poked around a bit, it seems Capt Bob lost his affiliate with KNBC somewhere’s around 2000-2002. He also had a run in with the law over selling a machinegun for 3k to some one. He got off light with only 2 months for the crime. Maybe there was a connection with the crime and him getting fired.

Johnmu..

I know, off topic and all... but I noticed on your map that one of the few states you haven't yet visited is Minnesota...

It'd be great to hoist a beer with you sometime. :nahrung002:
