Eau Claire (WQOW) - Friends are remembering the Eau Claire native killed in a plane crash in Dubai. They're talking about the kind and caring guy they knew back in school. Matthew Bell was a co-pilot on a UPS cargo plane that went down shortly after take off Friday. Bell's mother says he'd been working for UPS since 2006. The preliminary crash report shows there was smoke in the cockpit and the pilots were trying to return to Dubai's main airport. The two pilots were the only ones killed.
Family members say Matt's true passion was flying. Years ago he flew along with the blue angels at the Eau Claire air show, and later decided to attend flight school in Florida. Bell graduated from Eau Claire North in 1990. Friends back home are feeling the loss.
"I've been to Dubai, and I was picturing the airport where it happened and the first thing I could think of was his little princess, his daughter and him. Like I was telling you before, this is the 4th person we've lost from our graduating class. It's just a tragedy for something like this to happen," says Michael Schraeder, who grew up with Matt.
Matt leaves behind his four year old daughter and wife. The family says his funeral will be in Eau Claire, but is not sure when. There's a Facebook page where people are leaving comments about Matt.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - One of the pilots flying a UPS cargo plane that crashed in Dubai Friday is from Eau Claire.
Matthew C. Bell, 38, was one of two pilots who were killed when the 747-400 crashed near a Dubai airport. Matthew had been working for UPS as a pilot since 2006 says Matthew's mother Nancy. Nancy recalls her son moving to Florida 10 years ago to become a pilot. After flight school, Matthew landed a job with Delta, and then UPS says Nancy.
Family members say Bell is survived by his wife and a young daughter.
Bell was a 1990 graduate of Eau Claire North. Classmates call Bell, "one of those guys who got along with everyone." They say he will be missed dearly.

I went to college with him, and he was in my fraternity--
He was a good man.
