I'm sure that isn't the case for all out there, but that's the view from this household.

This pretty much proves my point. Rather than comment on the content of the post, a forum member responded with an ad hominem attack on the poster. It gets pretty old after a while.
I'm all for spirited discussion, differing opinions, counter points - but when it gets to "I win because I called you more bad names than you called me," I lose interest.

Be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

You didn't represent the truth. I point it out. And you cry fowl because you don't like my style.

A case in point, thank you GM.

Imo GM is right to the point.
Different opinions are needed to keep a board alive; while posters agreeing seemingly leads to talking to yourself.
BTW, that also goes for a left-leaning board, where there are hard-core conservatives needed for discussion..

...I don't think name calling and spirited discourse has anything to do with it either. I think a lot of boards users seek out the opposite view for the purpose of attacking it. Maybe it gives them somewhat of a feeling of empowerment, albet limited. At least someone is listening to them if only on a message board. People are angry, they want an outlet.

That is true Jim. I for one have noted my mistakes and have even apologized for some of my past actions. I don't know what else to do about that.
I have also noted that name calling and cursing on other boards hardly ever get criticized like they did here on Unto The Breach. I can't figure that one out either.

Think back to the posters, who, OVER THE YEARS, have disrespected you, me, and most of the members here by refusing to answer questions which would reveal the truth. They're trolls at best and all they do is keep the conversations going in circles.
Yea, so they get the post count up. So what.
Not for me.

I only attack the idiots who base their opinions on things that aren't true. And the intensity of that attack increases with the amount of times said idiot has been shown the truth.
The intensity of the attack also increases when the said idiot runs away from the truth, dodges fact revealing questions, and then starts up their illogical, irrational, and irresponsible "opinion" all over again....
CP, I think it`s no easy thing with the truth, especially not in political discussions.
What is truth and what is opinion?
I`ll try to make my point clearer by giving an example - abortion. ( This is only an example! )
I guess I know your take on this, as well as you know mine. You are strictly against it, it`s baby-killing to you, while I am pro-choice.
We both are convinced of our point of view .
So, what now?
Can you claim the truth? Can I?
Imo at best there is a personal truth concerning this special issue, but in no way an absolute one.
Of course there are political issues where one can say this is right or this is wrong, but mostly you can`t.
You said to GM: You didn't represent the truth. I point it out. Which truth are you talking about? Or is it your opinion?

Abortion verses Pro-life is not be a good example in so far as having a political discussion regarding "what is truth and what is opinion". For most who are pro-life find their facts coming from what the Bible presents as God's position on the subject. Most profilers are Christian and therefore accept as truth that abortion is against God's will and as such is not an opinion. I think a different example would better serve your point.
Again, no offence intended, only saying the abortion issue will only side-track the discussion.

I am not offended, JackA. As I recall your posts, they`ve always been written in a civil and decent way.
I accept that for a true Christian that is the truth. But what about people like me, who are more like a paper-Christian and not a strict believer?
Can it be the truth for me also, even if I don`t believe?
