II. AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR:
By direction of the President, under the provisions of Army Regulations 600-45, August 8, 1932, A Silver Star is awarded by the Commanding General, United States Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, to each of the following named officers and enlisted men:

CLIFTON R. ASHLEY, (335117) Private, United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action on January 13, 1943 at Guadalcanal. Private Ashley was one of two volunteers who pushed forward of the front lines to engage enemy attempting to place knee mortars in action. He was instrumental in disposing initially of two enemy mortar-men and one sniper and eventually a total of twelve, besides others wounded. He returned five times to his own lines to obtain additional hand grenades and ammunition, and continued at his task until severely wounded.
